How much does it cost to own a website?

In this post, let’s take a look at how much it would really cost to own a website. What are the costs involved in having a website e.g. techoppa.com?

To keep it simple and easy to understand, the techoppa.com address is known as a domain name. This is the URL address you enter into your browser when you visit a website. The address then translates into a server address where you can find the files for that URL.

Websites in today’s era does more that just showing static HTML files. Like in the case of techoppa.com, a WordPress Content Management System is used to serve dynamic content and perform other tasks like form submissions etc. Such setups requires a lot more than the web servers of 1990. To keep things simple again, you basically need a web server capable of running PHP scripts, and a database server for data look ups.

Sounds complicated already?

If we take a look a bit deeper, remember that domain name has to translate into a server address? This part is taken care of by the DNS server. So make sure the domain registrar you have selected also has DNS management available or you may have to subscribe to that service separately.

And what about SSL? The cert that gives your URL a https:// in front e.g. https://techoppa.com

Wait a minute... Seriously?, I'm lost already...

Most people would have opted for the easy way out by now, to subscribe to a website service that promises to have your website up immediately without all these complicated instructions, and only for around $10 monthly.

But before you dive in, do Google on whether that service gives you what you need. Or you could also send in your questions.

Most platforms have their limitations, in one way or another. Some would still go ahead since the low monthly fees look tempting. In some cases, it may not even meet your requirements and it’s just throwing money away.

The only way to avoid realizing that you have to add on numerous missing parts takes a lot of research. The best scenario is to put together the best services from different providers and linking them all up but this requires server configuration knowledge. Actually, that’s what techoppa.com does anyway, consider engaging techoppa? 🙂

Anyway, here’s a guideline of a rough estimate of how much each component may cost you. Do note that there are a wide variety of available options out there and everyone sells differently. Prices are approximate and in SGD.
